Authorities in Pakistan’s Adiala Jail barred former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from meeting his family members who had come to visit him.
The visitors were told that the designated day for meeting prisoners is Thursday and that they should wait till then.
Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Sharif were lodged in the high-security Adiala Jail Friday night. This was after security officials took them into custody at the Lahore airport upon their arrival from London.
Police officials also took away the clothes and food that was brought for the father-daughter duo by their family members.
Nawaz Sharif and his daughter are being given ‘B’ class facilities inside the jail which include attached washrooms, bed, mattress, table and chair, a room cooler, a 21-inch television, among others. They will also be allowed to meet each other.
Their counsel Khawaja Haris was to submit an appeal against the duo’s conviction before the Islamabad High Court today.
The appeal will now be filed on Monday.
As per law, an appeal can be made within 10 days of the verdict’s announcement. For Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, Monday is the last day to appeal against the verdict.
Meanwhile addressing the media, Shahbaz Sharif, brother of Nawaz Sharif and President of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), said, “We have come to know that they (Nawaz Sharif and Maryam) have been taken to Adiala Jail and they’ll be tried inside the jail. Only terrorists are tried inside a jail. This is wrong. What message do you want to send across the country?”
