The no-confidence motion pushed by the Opposition against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government was rejected by the Lok Sabha on Friday.
The victory for the NDA came after an action-packed session in Parliament that witnessed several searing speeches by both the leaders of the opposition parties and the BJP.
The NDA passed the no-confidence motion with an overwhelming majority of 325 votes in favour of the government out of 451 votes. Only 126 MPs voted in favour of the motion.
The results were put out after a 12-hour heated debate that saw both the government and the Opposition trade barbs. The highlight of the day, however, was Rahul Gandhi’s impromptu hug to PM Modi after his blistering speech.
The voting took place in presence of the MPs from the BJP and the opposition parties. However, members of the Shiv Sena, BJD and TRS were not present in the House during the voting. Several AIADMK members opposed the motion, providing a boost to the NDA.
HERE’S HOW THE DRAMA UNFOLDED
After a 10-hour long heated debate on the achievements and failures of the NDA government PM Modi appealed all the parties to defeat the motion. He accused Congress president Rahul Gandhi of ‘crushing’ the truth and ‘playing with the national security’ by making allegations against him on the Doklam issue and by alleging corruption in the Rafale aircraft deal.
PM Modi took the offensive hours after Rahul Gandhi walked up to him to hug him. In an apparent jibe, PM Modi said that he appeared to be in a hurry to occupy the seat of the prime minister as kept asking him to stand for an embrace.
What is his hurry to come to power? Let me tell this member, it is the people who elected us. That is how we have come here.
However, moments after the hug went viral, BJP tweeted ‘We cannot thank you enough for the entertainment’.
PM Modi’s wit evoked laughter from across the benches. In response to Rahul’s wink after the hug, the PM said that the whole country watched the game he played with his eyes.
If Gandhi kept Modi in his line of fire throughout his speech, it was the turn of the Congress’ ruling family when the Prime Minister spoke.
The country is not unaware of the history of one family which stoked political instability in the country time and again for its selfish interests.
BRING A NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION IN 2024
Modi said his fate was in the hands of 125 crore people and added that he prayed to lord Shiva, who was invoked by Gandhi in his speech, and the countrymen, that the Congress leader bring a similar no-confidence motion in 2024.
He cited several development and welfare initiatives while hitting out at the opposition, saying the country has seen how much negativity has seeped into his rivals that they were speaking against the progress made by the country.
To remove him, these parties, which could not even stand each other, have got together but he had the people’s blessings, Modi said, as he recited verses and shlokas to describe the opposition as a decrepit ship without a captain.
This is not his government’s floor test but a “force test” that the Congress has done to see which parties are with it, he said.
Without naming Gandhi, Modi said due to his “careless” allegation on the Rafale deal, both India and France had to release statements. There is complete transparency in the deal, he asserted.
Gandhi also spoke about the Doklam issue but believed the Chinese Ambassador over our forces, Modi said referring to Gandhi’s meeting with Chinese diplomats during the standoff.
What have we come to? Everything does not merit a childish conduct.
Apparently referring to the opposition attack on his government over mob lynching incidents, Modi said he has asked state governments to take action against the culprits who indulge in violence.
WHO SAID WHAT:
I am thankful to PM Modi, the BJP and the RSS for letting me realise the real meaning of the Congress and of being Indian. They made me realise what it means to be a real Indian and a true Hindu.
“I might be Pappu for you, but let me tell you, I don’t hate you at all,” said Rahul.
“I met the President of France. I asked him about the secrecy clause and he denied that any such clause exists in the agreement. He told me so and I don’t have any objection if you tell this to everyone in the country. Under pressure from the prime minister, Nirmala Sitharaman told a lie to the nation,” said Rahul.
The last no-confidence motion was also moved by the Congress against the Vajpayee government. However, the BJP never moved such a motion during the 10-year rule of UPA. We had disagreements but we were aware that the numbers were with the UPA.
The biggest incident of mob lynching took place in 1984, said Rajnath Singh evoking the riots that claimed lives of hundreds of Sikhs in Delhi and surrounding areas.
Silencing the detractors of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that only a leader from humble background can understand the predicament of the poor farmer.
“Only a person born in the womb of poverty can feel the pain of the downtrodden,” said Rajnath.
NCP MP from Bihar’s Karihar Tariq Anwar said that the no-confidence vote is crucial as the people are not happy with the functioning of the NDA government. He said that in the last four years, PM Modi and BJP leaders spent most of their time in devising ploys to malign the Gandhi family.
A government that has been unable to amend the Lokpal Act has no right to speak about democracy.
Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivedi commenting on religious tensions said that people who do not know about religion are speaking about it. Saving democracy from the clutches of mobocracy is our responsibility, he said.

Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, attacked the government on the growing threat to the lives of minorities.
He said, “PM Modi expressed his desire to see each Muslim with a Quran and a computer in his hand. Then why have the allocations for minority education remained the same for so many years?”
“Wonderful oratory skills, great action, it felt like a Bollywood blockbuster. Even in 2014, the people were betrayed in the same way,” said Srinivas Kesineni from the TDP.
