Maratha reservation protests rock Maharashtra: 10 developments

Tension across Maharashtra continue to flare as the agitation for reservation for Marathas in government jobs and educational institutions has intensified.

The protest is likely to have a major impact in Western Maharashtra and Marathwada districts such as Aurangabad, Osmanabad, Beed and Ahmadnagar.

Here is what is happening in Maharashtra

Maratha Kranti Morcha workers set a truck ablaze in Aurangabad’s Gangapur during their protest.
Two people have attempted suicide today. One attempted suicide by jumping in the river whereas the other consumed poison. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
Locals in Aurangabad attacked the vehicle of Shiv Sena MP Chandrakant Khaire when he went to attend the funeral of the youth who drowned in Godavari river in the district yesterday.
A statewide bandh call was given by Maratha Kranti Morcha. Bus services suspended in many regions. Schools and colleges too closed in the Marathawada region.
Protestors torched a vehicle and vandalised 13 others including a police van and bus in Parbhani’s Gangakhed.

Internet services have been suspended in the Aurangabad region.
Earlier today, protestors refused to cremate Kakasaheb Shinde (the protestor who had committed suicide yesterday) till the government agreed to their demands.
Protesters clashed with police in Aurangabad and torched two fire brigade vehicles. At least one policeman was injured in the clashes.
Local news agencies report that police head constable Kadgavkar from the Usmanabad main branch died in the stampede that resulted from the fire/burning on the Kaigaon bridge.
