Atal Bihari Vajpayee death: Last rites to be held at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal today

The funeral of the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be held at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal in Delhi today at 4 pm.

The Bharat Ratna recipient died on Thursday evening at AIIMS. He was admitted to the hospital on June 11 due to chest congestion and kidney tract infection.

Vajpayee’s body has been kept at his residence 6A Krishna Menon Marg from where it will be taken to BJP headquarters.

People can pay their respects to the BJP leader at the party headquarters on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg from 9 am onwards.

The funeral procession will begin from the headquarters at around 1 pm and will conclude at Smriti Sthal located between Lal Bahadur Shastri’s Vijay Ghat and Jawaharlal Nehru’s memorial Shanti Van.

The Delhi Police has issued an advisory about the elaborate traffic arrangements on Friday.

In order to facilitate movement of commuters and to ensure smooth follow of traffic, the police will close 25 roads in the national capital.

SEVEN-DAY NATIONAL MOURNINGThe Centre on Thursday announced a seven-day national mourning and state funeral for the late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who will be cremated at Smriti Sthal on the banks of river Yamuna on Friday.

The national flag will be flown at half mast throughout India and Indian missions abroad between August 16 and 22 — the period of national mourning.

As a mark of respect to the departed soul, the Central government offices will be closed for half day on Friday afternoon in Delhi and across the country, along with the Central Public Sector Undertakings.

The Delhi government offices will also remain closed. There will be no official entertainment events during the entire period of state mourning. Meanwhile, schools in Delhi and NCR will remain shut today.

TRIBUTES POUR IN

After the demise of the BJP veteran, tributes poured in from all quarters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who addressed the nation, said that Vajpayee’s voice and legacy will live on. He said that the former prime minister was an inspiration to him and that his death was a huge loss to the nation.

Former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said that Vajpayee won admirers across the political spectrum with his warm personality and gift of friendship.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, BJP president Amit Shah, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and a slew of other political leaders too paid their respects to Vajpayee.

From Bollywood actors to prominent sports personalities, all condoled the death of BJP’s tallest leader.
